So this is probably the fourth time I have tried to start this post today. The first try came at about 11:30AM upon arriving home from some early morning writing. It works once or twice a week to go to a nearby favorite coffee shop right when they open and work for a few hours. I’m not sure why I’ve had such a hard time getting to it, except that maybe I left all my words behind when I tore myself away from a couple of awesome quotes that I was transcribing this morning. I’m grateful that I get to go back to it all tomorrow afternoon and evening. Just in case you’re wondering about the transcribing, when I originally listened to all my interviews (now getting up past 100 hours), I didn’t transcribe every single word. That would be unnecessary and ridiculously time consuming. I don’t have a need for each and every word. I would do something ranging between a general index of an interview and a word-for-word transcription. Now, I use those transcripts as very detailed outlines from which I can select specific quotes to include in my dissertation. It’s working out really well.
Anyway, I just want to tell you how impressed I am with the event organization that is happening this Saturday in Detroit. Maybe you can tell that I’m excited about my Saturday night. Blank Artists are celebrating their 6th anniversary this Saturday night at Park Bar. Scroll down a bit for that flyer. Planet E is celebrating their 20th anniversary this Saturday night as well. Again, scroll down for flyer. My biggest concern was how I was going to attend both parties and hear what I wanted to hear. I have strategies. I knew that it would all work out for everyone. Magically, it did. Here’s the brilliant schedule for the Planet E party:
FRONT ROOM
9-10 Planet E MUSIC HOUR
10-12:00 – Chuck Flask
12:00 – 2:00 – Monty Luke
2:00 – 4:00 – Urban Tribe
BACK ROOM
10 – 1:00 – Carl Craig
12:00 – 12:30 – Niko Marks (concurrent with C2′s set)
1:00 – 3:00 – Paul Woolford
3:00 – Close – Derrick May
Carl Craig is starting his set at 10pm, surprising and awesomely generous. I like that. That’s not a peak set time. However, a 3 hour time slot is nice for him. So, good all around. This party will go late, 5AM or so. They could have very easily scheduled the event much differently. I love how Paul Woolford, Monty Luke, and Urban Tribe are scheduled for times when the crowd will be the fullest. These guys are not new or unknown, not at all. But, they are also not as well known as Carl Craig or Derrick May.
Sherard Ingram (Urban Tribe, DJ Stingray)
And, now for the even more self-centered theme of this post, MY plans in particular for Saturday night. I really am very concerned about myself. I want to go to both parties. I particularly want to hear Urban Tribe (Sherard Ingram). Here are a few links:
Urban Tribe FACT Mix 222 Excellent mix!
DJ Stingray Interview in The Wire I love it when they put up full transcripts of interviews!
Now that this man is playing from 2-4, I can do everything I want to do. And I mean really, with a name like Sherard, how can it not be amazing. I wish my name was Sherard.

yeah, I wish my name was Sherard too. And I coordinated and created 2 of the most awesome Detroit techno lps of all time (up to now, maybe more to come?). that lineup looks great and I would be with you, checking Urban Tribe out. not that familar with Paul Woolford, but I think he had a pretty tight looking mix cd come out last year. interesting to hear what Carl will play during that slot, hopefully some less up front dance music and some of the more interesting productions he has inspired over the years. would love to hear “Chicken Noodle Soup” on a loud system. have fun!
I’m not really that familiar with Paul Woolford either. I may be missing some of the planet e party because I really want to go to the Blank Artists party that same night. Josh Dalberg’s Greenmeadows stuff is fun, and Jared Wilson too! Maybe there will be some fantastic party in May featuring some dude in a mask that we can both be at!
